Antidotes for Hazardous Attitudes

Recognizing the five major hazardous attitudes is the first step toward countering them so they don't affect your behaviour.

The next step is to "take an antidote" by telling yourself something opposite to the hazardous attitude. If you find yourself thinking, "It won't happen to me," mentally tell yourself, "That is a hazardous attitude" and replace it with the antidote: "It could happen to me."

Recognize a hazardous attitude, correctly label the thought and then say its antidote to yourself. In order to do this, you must memorize the antidotes for each of the hazardous attitudes and know them so well that they will automatically come to mind when you need them.

Anti-Authority Thought: "Don't tell me!"

Antidote: "FOLLOW THE RULES. THEY ARE USUALLY RIGHT."

Impulsivity Thought: "Do something - quickly"

Antidote: "NOT SO FAST. THINK FIRST."

Macho Thought: "I can do it!"

Antidote: "TAKING CHANCES IS FOOLISH."

Resignation Thought: "What's the use?"

Antidote: "I'M NOT HELPLESS. I CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE."

Think Safe Thoughts!

Recognizing the hazardous attitude and knowing the antidote are no guarantee that the safe thought will win out in a real situation. Human beings are too complex for this. But if you CAN'T recognize the attitude and DON'T know the antidote, then you can expect the hazardous attitude to dominate your decision-making.
